Apple Vs Samsung

My last post was on the Samsung Galaxy Ace which is a great android smartphone and really stands up well to the competition despite being the entry level handset in the Galaxy range.

One of the things I really liked about the Galaxy vs the HTC Desire its its compact size and sleep appearance (it is also very lightweight), and, as many of you probably already know, that has landed Samsung in a bit of a predicument regarding the increasingly aggressive and draconian Apple.

Apple are taking legal action against Samsung for allegedly taking elements of the IOS interface and design.

There seems to be more talk of icons than the design of the phone, which I find odd. I have used the iPhone and Galaxy and the icons are completely different, I really cannot see the issue here.

I would have thought that the design of the handset would be more of an issue, as from the front face the only real difference is the brand name printed on the Galazy and the use of a square (Galaxy) vs circular (iPhone) button at the bottom.

However, when viewed from the side or reverse they are completely different, and the Galaxy has a completely different feel and asthetic to it, nothing like the iphone, well, not the iphone 4 anyway! I guess the rounded back is similar in some ways to older iPhone models.

Regardless of differences Apple are (in my opinion) being ridiculous on this issue. Essentially all phones have a lot in common, as they all aspire to provide the same service or solve the same problems. Apple did not invent the mobile phone, or even the smart phone, nor even the touch screen phone. They are a late entrant to the market who now seem to think they own that market.

On that note, Apple also seem to think they own the phone in your pocket despite you paying good money for it, which is why I no longer use the iphone myself. I tired of their threats / locking down, and more recently use of non standard screws so you cannot even take the battery cover off!

Apple have lost the plot as far as I am concerned.

Consider DailyMobilePhones.Com “Team SamSung”, “Team Android”… even if the iPhone is the coolest thing on the market, Apple are not the coolest company.

Samsung Galaxy is Ace!

If you are not aware, Samsung recently released a “budget” version of their Galaxy range, the Smasung Galaxy Ace:

Recent reviews of this handset were good, but not perfect, many reviewers saying that this handset could not compete with the HTC Desire, or more senior members of the Galaxy family.

Well, I recently had the pleasure of playing with the Galaxy Ace and love this phone. For the price think this hard to beat,

It may not be as well specced as some of its rivals, but for the price the Samsung Galaxy Ace packs a lot of features into a small and very stylish package.

It is small, lightweight and pocket sized, unlike the Desire which could double as a drings tray! It is also cheaper than the Desire or its elder Galaxy siblings.

Its is very ergonomic with a nice rubberized and textured battery cover (it also shipss with a high gloss white battery cover if that is your preference).

The android implementation is good, and stable. I have had absolutely no issues with the phone freezing as some users have reported.

The use of Swype makes the touch screen far more viable for typing and works really well. If you dont know what Swype is then check this out!

Another thing that really impressed me with this phone is the quality of the screen and pictures it can take, and the screen itself.

This is not a technical review, if you want specs you ran find them here, its just a quick post to say do not write this phone off! Its a lot better than either the spec or other peoples reviews lead me to believe it would be.

If your in the market for a new Android phone, then its well worth a visit to the high street to check this one out.

Personally I rate this phone very highly, certainly better than other reviewers I have read, but, each to their own.

Is the HTC Sensation A Sensational Phone?

HTC have been coming out with a lot of high quality phones in recent years, but the latest model is the HTC Sensation. It’s the company’s new flagship model and has Android, a 1.2 GHz processor and a 4.3” screen. I’m currently using an iPhone but I keep considering switching to an HTC, and if I did then this would probably be my first choice.

To begin with I’m really impressed by the specs of the phone. I need my phone to be fast and easy to use, and it seems like the Sensation – with its 1.2GHz processor, 768MB or RAM and a variety of connectivity options – is one of the fastest on the market. It has a maximum download speed of 14.4Mbps and supports WiFi. The Sensation also has an HDMI port.

The camera also sounds great. It has a dual flash and is capable of recording 1080p videos. I regularly record clips of friends and family at events, so the better the camera the more useful a phone is to me.

Whether I’ll upgrade or go for a different option – probably the iPhone 5- when my contract runs out this year I’m not sure. The more I research the HTC Sensation the more I like the sound of it, so it’s going to be one of my main options. I’ve always wanted to get a BlackBerry too, although I think the HTC is a far better all round phone. It’s bound to be quite expensive at launch though!
